THE LOVE OF BABY, TOTS & PRE-SCHOOL SWIMMING
There’s something incredibly special about watching a little person discover the water.
From those very first tiny splashes, to the moment they confidently jump in, swim towards you and shout, “Again!” — these classes really are something special.
At Rubber Ducks, we believe that introducing children to water from an early age is about so much more than learning to swim.
It’s about building confidence, developing independence, creating positive experiences and helping children feel happy and comfortable in the water.
And it’s about bonding.
For babies and toddlers, having their grown-up right there in the water gives them that feeling of safety and reassurance. They can explore, try something new, have a little wobble and then look back and see their parent smiling at them.
Those little moments of connection are priceless.
A cuddle after a dip.
A huge smile after a jump.
That proud little look when they manage something they couldn’t do last week.
These are the moments that make swimming so special.
And then they grow… Before you know it, they’re moving into our pre-school classes and something magical starts to happen.
They become independent.
This is probably my favourite age group to teach.
You can really see how far they’ve come. They know the routines, they listen, they have their own little personalities and they start to take real ownership of what they’re doing in the water.
And I LOVE watching them all join in together.
Take The Wheels on the Bus… We get to the bit: “The children on the bus go up and down…” …and suddenly the whole group are bouncing higher and higher. Some of them are practically hitting the ceiling! Then you hear: “Higher, Daddy!”
And everyone goes even higher! It makes me smile every single time.
Because yes, we’re singing a nursery rhyme and having fun… …but we’re also developing coordination, balance, listening skills, confidence, movement, communication and independence. And they don’t even realize they’re learning.
That’s what I love about teaching young children. The learning happens through play.
We sing.
We splash.
We jump.
We laugh.
We play games.
And somewhere amongst all that fun, they’re developing skills that will stay with them for life.
Early exposure to water really matters.
The earlier children have positive experiences in and around water, the more familiar it becomes. We want water to be something they understand and respect, rather than something that feels frightening or unfamiliar.
Of course, swimming lessons are only one part of water safety - but developing water confidence and skills from a young age is an important part of a child’s journey. And perhaps my favourite part? Watching the journey.
The nervous little baby who once clung to Mum.
The toddler who wouldn’t put their face in.
The little one who finally let go.
The child who suddenly jumped in by themselves.
And then that confident pre-schooler who swims, sings, jumps, laughs and proudly shouts: “Look what I can do!”
Those moments are why we love what we do. We don’t just teach swimming. We help little people grow in confidence. We give parents and children time together. We create happy memories. And, hopefully, we help children develop a lifelong love and respect for the water.
If your little one is ready to start their swimming journey, we’d love to welcome you to Rubber Ducks Swim School. From those very first baby splashes to confident pre-school swimmers — we’re here for every step of the journey.
